The constitution of the party

Title 1: Preamble.

Article 1.
In Senegal has been created a political party whose seat is located in Dakar and whose denomination is 'Parti Socialiste du Sénégal (P.S.) [Senegal Socialist Party).

Article 2.
The flag of the Socialist Party is constituted of a red five-pointed star on a green field. For its ballot papers, the party shall use, as colour and emblem, a red five-pointed star.

The forerunner of the Socialist Party was the 'Union progressiste sénégalaise' (UPS) [Senegalese progressist Union], created in 1958, after successive merges which had led to the constitution of the 'Bloc démocratique sénégalais' (BDS) [Senegalese democratic Bloc] in 1948 and later the 'Bloc populaire sénégalais' (BPS) [Senegalese People's Bloc]. The Socialist Party was officially recognized on 6 September 1959. [At that time, Senegal was part of the ephemeral Mali federation, but independence had not been proclaimed yet.]

[The original text is not really clear and does not explain the succession of the parties: whether it was the very same party which changed its name or a party which absorbed other ones is not precisely described.]

In December 1976, UPS changed its name to PS [therefore, it was the UPS which was officially recognized in 1959 and not the PS, wasn't it?]. In November 1976, it had joined the Socialist International.

The party claims to have 1,200,000 members. [Senegal has slightly more than 8,000,000 inhabitants.]
